GUIDELINES FOR CHOOSING RECIPIENTS OF GRANTS FROM THE DEAN'S FUND FOR SCHOLARLY TRAVEL
ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants for assistance from the Dean's Fund must be enrolled graduate students at the time of application and at the time of their proposed presentation.
Applicants must have been invited to deliver a paper that represents their own work. Giving a poster presentation, serving as a discussant or respondent on a panel, giving a job talk, etc., do not qualify for support.
Applicants must be in year three through first DCE year.
THE APPLICATION:
Please complete and submit the application form, along with a copy of the letter of acceptance to the conference or a copy of the conference program where your name and paper title appear.
The student's advisor must review and initial the request.
Application deadlines are:
Sept. 1 (for travel during September through November)
Dec. 1 (for travel during December through February)
March 1 (for travel during March through May)
AWARD GUIDELINES:
Awards will be funded at cost to a maximum of $600. Students who are awarded a grant will be paid at the end of the month in their regular stipend checks. If a student is awarded less than the maximum, he or she may apply for assistance for additional trips (under the same guidelines as above), but may not receive more than the $600 maximum per academic year.
The Graduate School will, in cases where there is a departmental or other non-Graduate School contribution, consider matching that contribution, up to the $600 limit.
Please also note that the award is taxable.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Preference will be given to students in the humanities and social sciences, and to those in the natural sciences and engineering in the higher years of study (i.e. G4, G5, and first year DCE).
Preference will be given to those students who have made a good-faith attempt to secure partial funding for their trips from their advisor, from departmental, or from non-departmental sources before requesting assistance from the Dean’s Fund. The Dean’s Fund will be able to assist many more students if it can cost-share expenses for paper-giving trips.
More information can be found on the Graduate School's website.
